Current NewsChemguard Introduces New Short-Chain* Fluorosurfactant for Fire-Fighting FoamsMansfield, Texas, June 23, 2008 – Chemguard’s new FS-157 short-chain* fluorosurfactant – a replacement for DuPont 1157 – can dramatically reduce the surface tension of fire-fighting foams, enabling foams to develop an aqueous film over the surface of both hydrocarbon and polar liquids. Formulated to improve the effectiveness of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), alcohol-resistant aqueous film-forming foam (AR-AFFF), film-forming fluoroprotein (FFFP), and alcohol-resistant film-forming fluoroprotein (AR-FFFP), FS-157 (an amphoteric short-chain* perfluoroalkyl betaine surfactant) can reduce the surface tension to less than 16 dynes/cm at 0.01% concentrations. “Chemguard chemists have developed a product that can replace DuPont 1157 in any formula,” Specialty Chemicals Division Sales and Marketing Senior Manager Bob Gilbert points out. “In addition, the high surface tension efficiency of FS-157 may allow for lower concentrations than with 1157.” Chemguard FS-157 meets the goals of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 2010/15 PFOA Stewardship Program and will be registered on global inventories in all of the countries where it is sold. A nonflammable product, FS-157 can be stored in any warehouse. Bulk volumes of FS-157 will be available in July.
