Chemguard Introduces New Short-Chain* Fluorosurfactant for Fire-Fighting Foams
June 16, 2008
Chemguard’s new FS-157 short-chain fluorosurfactant improves the effectiveness of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), alcohol-resistant aqueous film-forming foam (AR-AFFF), film-forming fluoroprotein (FFFP), and alcohol-resistant film-forming fluoroprotein (AR-FFFP). An amphoteric short-chain* perfluoroalkyl betaine surfactant, FS-157 dramatically reduces surface tension, enabling foams to develop an aqueous film over the surface of hydrocarbon or polar liquids.
“With FS-157, Chemguard chemists have developed a product that can replace DuPont 1157 in any formula,” Specialty Chemicals Division Sales and Marketing Senior Manager Bob Gilbert points out. “In addition, the surface tension efficiency of FS-157 may allow for lower concentrations than with 1157.”
FS-157 can reduce the surface tension to less than 16 dynes/cm at 0.01% concentrations. Nonflammable, FS-157 can be stored in any warehouse.
Bulk volumes of FS-157 will be available in July.
Chemguard FS-157 is used in support of the goals of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 2010/15 PFOA Stewardship Program and will be registered on global inventories in all of the countries where it is sold.
