Chemguard Develops New Short-Chain (C6)* Fluorosurfactants for Fire-Fighting Foams

Chemguard continues to add to its line of short-chain (C6)* fluorosurfactants with the introduction of the new FS-183 amphoteric fluorosurfactant. FS-183 improves the effectiveness of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), alcohol-resistant aqueous film-forming foam (AR-AFFF), film-forming fluoroprotein (FFFP), and alcohol-resistant film-forming fluoroprotein (AR-FFFP). FS-183 – an amphoteric short-chain (C6)* perfluoroalkyl amine oxide surfactant – dramatically reduces surface tension, enabling foams to develop an aqueous film over the surface of hydrocarbon or polar liquids.
“With FS-183, Chemguard research chemists have developed a product that can replace DuPont 1183 in any formula,” Specialty Chemicals Division Sales and Marketing Senior Manager Bob Gilbert points out. “In addition, the surface tension efficiency of FS-183 may allow for lower concentrations than with 1183. As a nonflammable product, FS-183 can be stored in any warehouse.”
The chart below illustrates the advantages of the new Chemguard line of amphoteric short-chain fluorosurfactants against DuPont Forafac® 1183. Note that FS-183 can reduce the surface tension to less than 17 dynes/cm at 0.01% concentrations.

Chemguard FS-183 is used in support of the goals of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 2010/15 PFOA Stewardship Program and will be registered on global inventories in all of the countries where it is sold. Bulk volumes of FS-183 are now available.
